Biden breaking records with young voters
He's defying expectations
Today @ 9pm ET: We join our friends at Blue Future, which connects young organizers to jobs on progressive campaigns, to discuss the revelatory Harvard Institute of Politics’ Youth Poll.
Hi friends!
Joe Biden was not the young voters’ candidate, but he has evidently been the young voters’ president during his first 100 days.
In Focus
Top political findings in the Youth Poll:
59 percent of young voters approve of the President’s performance.
The President’s favorability is 3 points higher among young voters than that of Senator Bernie Sanders.
COVID-19 and the economy are young voters’ top issues.
Our takeaways:
Young voters will approve of those who are loyal to them. Biden has already yielded clear, tangible results for young Americans and has used his bully pulpit to elevate issues important to them like COVID-19, racial justice, and climate.
The loudest voices do not necessarily represent young voters (i.e. Biden is more popular than Sanders).
“It’s the economy, stupid.” Despite what the dominant media narrative suggests, young voters prioritize the economy above all else.
What We are Reading
Young voters, big government: “Over the last five years, on a host of issues ranging from health care to climate, immigration, poverty and affirmative action, the poll found that young people are increasingly more likely to favor government intervention…” (US News)
